Poker Book Review –
“No Limit Holdem: Theory and Practice”
While it seems true that just about any poker player who has made a dent on the World Poker Tour or who sports a WSOP bracelet has a book on the market these days, there can be no doubt that the literary efforts of David Sklansky must be considered among the cream of the crop. A prime example is his book, "No Limit Holdem: Theory and Practice."
Readers who have already consumed a number of printed material about the game of Texas Hold'em may be a bit skeptical about what new information they are likely to find in the pages of “No Limit Holdem: Theory and Practice.” Rest assured the pearls of insight that can only be provided by a mind as keen as David Sklansky make this a worthy addition to any poker lover’s bookshelf.
Co-written with the help of the prolific Ed Miller, “No Limit Holdem: Theory and Practice” lays out a comprehensive view of the game in a way that is accessible and entertaining in equal measure. The book has been intelligently divided into different sections that each addresses specific elements of the game. This makes "No Limit Holdem: Theory and Practice" a particularly useful volume for Texas Holdem players of virtually all skill levels.
Part One is aptly title “Fundamentals” and is an excellent place to start your long journey toward a mastery of this most popular of poker variants. From manipulating the pot size to reading hands to playing the nuts on the river - a wide range of essential issues are laid out clearly and concisely. Furthermore, you will be treated to Sklansky’s general philosophy on key facets such as pot size, implied odds and thinking in terms of expectation. It’s a virtual treasure trove of valuable information that’s worth reading numerous times in order to yield the most value.
The second part of the book is titled “Concepts and Weapons.” For many readers, particularly those who are more than familiar with the Cadillac of poker games, this may be the most invaluable section of the book. It’s a pleasure to read Sklansky lay out his specific tactics in a number of real-life scenarios. While no book can totally prepare a player for the challenges of the green felt, there is much aid that can be drawn from the pages of “No Limit Holdem: Theory and Practice.”
Having racked up a broad range of printed material, Sklansky has established himself as a true sage of all things gambling. Though he will always be primarily associated with poker, it would be a mistake to overlook the many fine pieces he has penned on blackjack and a host of other gambling-related topics.
This is no insignificant side venture for Sklansky. He, Mason Malmuth, and Ray Zee serve as the founders and operating officers of Two Plus Two Publishing, which is widely recognized among the professional and amateur gambling communities alike as being a top-notch source of reliable information. It’s not a stretch to say that David Sklansky has earned a measure of respect in the publishing world that rivals his eminence on the global poker stage.
